Israeli company aims to bring solar power a major step nearer
Pythagoras Solar, an Israel solar energy start-up with R&D facilities in Tel Aviv and an office in San Mateo, California, has just mobilized $10 million in venture capital to take forward its concept of a stationary photovoltaic (PV) solar panel that is designed "to change some of the 'basic principles' behind PV technology today" according to its developers. Some leading-edge companies are concentrating on developing entirely new breakthrough technologies - for example, thin silicon films to replace 'traditional' crystalline silicon technology used in manufacturing 95 percent of photoelectric cells today. But thin films have yet to be mass-produced.

Israeli company leads the gray product revolution
Founded 10 years ago, GeronTech is involved in a range of products, from physical assistance devices that make it easier to transport people, to software designed to stimulate the mind and ward off diseases like Alzheimer's or Parkinson's. GeronTech checks out products or proposals much as a venture capital fund does. Normie and his staff do their "due diligence," checking with engineering, financial, and marketing experts on whether the product is practical, and what, if any market there would be for it. Once a product or idea is vetted, GeronTech decides how it can be of greatest help in getting it to the market, Normie explains. Products adopted by Gerontech include Smart-Step by Andante Medical Devices, a specially designed biofeedback device for individuals with orthopedic problems who cannot walk properly.

Israeli company keeps a virtual eye on drivers
GreenRoad, based in Or Yehuda and with offices in the US and Britain, has developed a monitoring system, called the GreenRoad Safety Center, which supervises drivers' habits behind the wheel. Information is gathered into a device installed in the car and transmitted in real time using cell phone technology to a database, where it is collated and analyzed - available for review later on by the driver or other relevant parties. Data upload is possible anywhere your cell phone has reception, and when it's not, the in-car "black box" device stores information and transmits it later. When a driver "violates" proper driving policy, they are gently "reminded" by the system that they need to adjust their driving attitude.

Live from…. The living room
When there's an exciting news event, news stations dispatch mobile broadcasting stations and crews of engineers which set up cameras at every possible location and go to great lengths to get the story. Riots in Kenya, war in Kosovo, the US presidential election campaign - all these draw media groups from far and wide. And what if the broadcasting network in question is comparatively small, and lacks the resources with which to fly camera crews to the other end of the globe? Or what if it were merely a local-community TV network seeking to air a high-school basketball championship? LiveU Ltd., an Israeli start-up founded just over a year ago, aims, so it claims, to revolutionalize the world of live broadcasts.
