L Capital firm bought by Novartis
US-Israeli venture capital fund L Capital Partners, founded by managing partner Jonathan Leitersdorf, has sold portfolio company Protez Pharmaceuticals Inc. to Swiss giant Novartis AG for up to $400 million. $100 million will be paid immediately and an additional $300 million will be paid upon reaching milestones and in royalties on successful products.

Teva to buy biotech co CoGenesys for $400m
Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. is acquiring private biopharmaceutical company CoGenesys Inc. for $400 million cash, funded from its internal resources. Maryland-based CoGenesys has a broad based biotechnology platform and is focused on the development of peptide and protein-based medicines for cardiovascular disease, cancer and autoimmune disorders. The company was founded in 2005 as a division within Human Genome Sciences Inc. to focus on early drug development and was spun off in June 2006. HGSI still controls the company.

India's Sun Pharmaceutical buys Taro
Taro Pharmaceutical Industries, an Israeli generic drugs company known for playing its cards close to its chest, won't be dealing in the public arena any more. It has accepted an offer from Mumbai-listed Sun Pharmaceutical Industries in a transaction valued at $454 million, including debt assumption.

Israel's QBI sells eye treatment to Pfizer
Pfizer Inc., the world's biggest drug maker, said on Wednesday it had acquired a genetic eye treatment from Israeli biotech company Quark Biotech Inc. (QBI) in a multi-million dollar deal. Daniel Zurr, president and chief executive officer at QBI, would not disclose exact financial details regarding the agreement, which is subject to approval by the US Federal Trade Commission, but told Reuters the deal was in the "hundreds of millions of dollars". Under the agreement Pfizer acquires an exclusive worldwide license to Quark's human gene RTP-801, thought responsible for most cases of blindness in the developed world, and to molecules that modify its expression or function.

“The Sunday Times”: Teva in bid for Pinewood
The “Sunday Times” reported yesterday that Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. is one of the candidates in the running to acquired Irish generic drug manufacturer Pinewood Healthcare. The company is expected to be sold for €120 million, and a deal is expected to be concluded by the end of this month.
