Citramed's citrus extract could be world's first natural preservative
Citramed has developed a method to squeeze all the antibacterial properties found in the rind of citrus fruit and apply it as a preservative, in not only health products but as a natural preservative in the food industry as well. The company has filed a patent for more than 80 possible uses. Founded in 2003, out of the Ashkelon Technological Industries incubator, with research entrepreneurs Uzi Affek and Janette Orenstein from the Volcani Center in Israel, Citramed is now based in Kibbutz Gat close to Kiriat Gat. The company's product joins a list of Israeli-made natural extracts that work to improve health for people everywhere. There is Lycomato's tomato-based additive to protect against sunburn naturally (from within), and Tel Aviv University's Prof. Michael Ovadia whose cinnamon extract invention works as a natural anti-viral.

Researchers develop method for transmitting medical images via cell phones
Jerusalem, April 29, 2008 – A process to transmit medical images via cellular phones that has been developed by a Hebrew University of Jerusalem researcher has the potential to provide sophisticated radiological diagnoses and treatment to the majority of the world’s population lacking access to such technology. This would include millions in developing nations as well as those in rural areas of developed countries who live considerable distances from modern medical centers. Prof. Boris Rubinsky has demonstrated the feasibility of his new concept that can replace current systems -- which are based on conventional, stand-alone medical imaging devices -- with a new medical imaging system consisting of two independent components connected through cellular phone technology. The concept could be developed with various medical imaging modalities. This new technique is described in the latest online issue of the journal, Public Library of Science ONE (PLoS ONE).

Laser medical scan does away with biopsies
Sanjiv Gambhir, and colleagues at Stanford University, California, US, used gold nanoparticles coated in silica, as well as carbon nanotubes to perform their full-body scans. The scans can so far reveal only tumours just under the rats’ skin, to a depth of 2 mm. Gambhir thinks that can be increased with higher nanoparticle concentrations or higher laser power, but says it is unclear how far the method will ultimately reach.
